“There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” Luke 2:36-38
In just three short verses, we see through the prophetess Anna, a model of perseverance, devotion in prayer, thankfulness and joyful boldness. Widowed after only seven years of marriage, Anna spent the rest of her life dedicated entirely to God, in the temple day and night, worshipping, fasting & praying.
The world might have seen Anna as an insignificant elderly widow, but God saw a woman whose faithfulness was preparing her for a monumental moment. May we each remember that we also are significant to the fulfillment of God’s divine plan. God sees us, hears us and will use us if we allow Him to do so. Anna waited for decades for the promised Savior. May we persevere, trusting God’s timing & that He will answer our prayers in His way, not our way.
Because she lived in constant communion with God, Anna was attuned to His voice and recognized the Messiah immediately. When she saw Jesus, she gave thanks and spoke of Him to others who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. She became one of the first witnesses of Christ. May we be thankful and bold like her, sharing God’s hope with everyone we meet.

“rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Prayer is a privilege, allowing us to participate in God’s ongoing work in the world. If do not pray, we miss out on witnessing God’s blessings through answered prayer. Jesus regularly went off alone to speak with His Father. If prayer was important enough for Jesus, how much more important if should be for us.
May we follow Anna’s model, living in constant communion with God through prayer, joyfully sharing the Good News with everyone we meet
